OUR HOME...

Uji in Kyoto

The heart of Japanese tea country...

In springtime, the cheery blossom of April adds another dimension to the stunning appearance of our cities and in autumn, the hills and mountains that surround us are a riot of deep autumnal colours.

We are proud of the tea gardens that cover the landscape of the prefecture and we urge visitors to take time to visit them.

Uji city sits on the banks of the grand Uji river (Ujigawa). We have an abundance of Shinto and Buddhist temples too many to mention.

Our regional food is fresh, simple, seasonal and delicious, perfectly accompanied by local green tea.

Uji City, on the outskirts of Kyoto, our home for 170 years, has a history of tea making going back to the 12th century, indeed Uji is the traditional birth place of Japanese tea.

900 years ago Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu promoted cultivation of tea around Uji and ever since the area has been renowned as the home of best Japanese tea.

We live in an area of great natural beauty, cultural and historical importance. Kyoto was the capital of Japan between 794 and 1868. Visitors from all over the world flock to see the countless temples and shrines.

Arriving from Tokyo or Osaka on the futuristic Shinkansen (bullet train) visitors move from the ultimate rail transport to the amazing beauty of the region.
